What is a web application?

A web application is any service that is delivered via the internet or a combination of local and web based media. The application itself is accessed via the internet through either web browsers or a custom interface such as HTA HTML APPLICATIONS.  We like to refer to such web apps as Managed Application Services.

Is cloud computing the same as "web application"?

The term cloud is being used a lot lately.  It's definition largely depends upon the users experience or understanding of the technology in use.  For most people, you can imagine the "cloud" as the "Internet" as you know it.  For example a service that provides on-line storage of pictures, may at one time have been called simply "on-line storage" but today many be marketed as "to the cloud".  Any wiser?...  No not really?  The difference is not clear and every vendor will have its own spin on whether their service is "cloud computing" or simply a website.  If you consider the use of EBay on a mobile device, you do not have the software in your device.  Simply the means to access it.   You don't often wonder if your watch list will be backed up or lost.  In this sense you could argue that EBay is in effect cloud computing.  All the day to day tasks are taken care of.  If you loose your device, you don't loose EBay!  If you are a user of ebay who just buys things, you might still call it a website, however a business seller using all Ebays on-line tools and services may look at it more as "SaS" Software as a Service or Cloud Computing.
